Prom it Forward
Prom It Forward Minnesota project is an annual fully donated and volunteer based fundraiser, where 100% of the proceeds from selling donated formal gowns goes directly to helping girls and women who have been sexually assaulted, abused or trafficked. Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center has been the benefactor for the past two years and will be again for the 2019-2020 season.Dresses of all colors, styles and sizes are donated to Rapids Alterations and Reapair. Girls and women are encouraged to come in, try-on and purchase the dresses at largely discounted prices ranging from $10 -$300. Dresses have been sold for Holly Ball, adult proms, cruises, weddings, as well as prom.
Dresses are accepted throughout the year with a big drop-off event being one of the Saturdays before Thanksgiving. Special sale dates are the first Saturday in January, February and March. Dresses are also available weekdays at Rapids Alterations December – March.
The project is always in need of formal gowns of all kinds as well as volunteers willing to spend some valuable time helping a great cause.
Cindy Battleson, the owner of Rapids Alterations and Repair in Sauk Rapids, was struck with the idea when the big prom consignment shop in town closed leaving all previously loved prom dresses with no where to go. Cindy and her staff, as well as various volunteers, spend hundreds of hours collecting, tagging, pricing and taking photos of the 400 dresses collected to spread awareness of the project on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
In it’s first year the project raised $6,000; year two raised $8,000 for a total of $14,000. 100% of the money goes to helping girls and women who have been sexually assaulted, abused or trafficked. Prom It Forward Minnesota has been the biggest fundraiser for Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center to date.
